Pregnant Women

Pregnant women suffer with drug and alcohol addiction in Ontario and around the world. The rates of alcohol use, abuse and addiction among pregnant women in Ontario is of critical concern due to the irreparable harm that can be done to the unborn child if the mother drinks while pregnant. A 2002 report estimated that around 4 percent of women who sought treatment for alcohol related problems admitted to drinking while they were pregnant. Additionally, pregnant women who used alcohol were also much more likely to use other illegal drugs, such as marijuana, cocaine and heroin.

When a pregnant woman in Ontario is struggling with drug addiction during her pregnancy, that drug use affects more than just her – it affects her fetus as well. The drugs can also have devastating effects on the child when they are born. Certain drugs can cause nutritional deficiencies, anemia, and fetal growth retardation. The use of drugs by pregnant and postpartum women can also increase the chance of developing toxemia or pre-eclampsia. Marijuana use during pregnancy can cause attention deficit, memory problems and impaired decision making skills.
