Pregnant women suffer with drug and alcohol addiction in Chicago and around the world. The rates of alcohol use, abuse and addiction among pregnant women in Chicago is of critical concern due to the irreparable harm that can be done to the unborn child if the mother drinks while pregnant. A 2002 report estimated that around 4 percent of women who sought treatment for alcohol related problems admitted to drinking while they were pregnant. Additionally, pregnant women who used alcohol were also much more likely to use other illegal drugs, such as marijuana, cocaine and heroin.
